By Senator Ken Yager
January 17, 2024
On January 14, Tennessee lawmakers from across the state gathered on Capitol Hill in Nashville to mark the beginning of the 114th General Assembly. The start of a new legislative session is always an exciting time. It’s a season full of new ideas for legislation fueled by the shared enthusiasm of lawmakers committed to improving state government and championing the needs of their districts.Â
In Tennessee, for legislation to become law, it must receive majority approval in both chambers of the General Assembly: the Senate and the House of Representatives. The Senate has 33 members, while the House has 99 members. I am deeply honored to have been re-elected in 2024 to continue serving as the Senator for District 12, representing nine of Tennessee's finest counties: Campbell, Clay, Fentress, Macon, Morgan, Overton, Pickett, Roane, and Scott.
Senators are elected to four-year terms, with elections staggered by district. Those representing even-numbered districts are elected during one general election, while those from odd-numbered districts are elected two years later.
This year, as the 114th General Assembly began its work, newly elected and re-elected Senators proudly took their oath of office, surrounded by loved ones. I took the Oath of Office on the Bible my wife, Malinda, gave to me when I was first elected to the Senate in 2008. Following the ceremony, the Senate adjourned for an organizational session, providing new members and committee chairs the opportunity to settle into their offices and prepare for the important work ahead.
During the legislative session, which typically runs until late April or early May, I will share weekly updates on key developments from the General Assembly, focusing on impactful legislation that matters to our district and state. I’d also like to hear from you on the issues you care about.

Capitol Tours and Pages
You are cordially invited to visit the Capitol and experience the Senate in action. Witnessing the legislative process up close is a unique and educational opportunity. If you’re interested, please contact my office—I’d be delighted to meet with you and arrange a tour of the Capitol.
For families, I also encourage children or grandchildren ages 10-18 to consider serving as my page for the day. This exciting experience allows young people to join me on the Senate floor and gain a firsthand understanding of the legislative process. It’s a wonderful way to inspire the next generation of leaders. Feel free to reach out to my office to schedule your visit or inquire about the page program—I look forward to welcoming you. Just call the office to set it up.Â
Letters of Recommendations for Grants
One of my priorities as your state senator is to boost funding into communities in our district, whether that is through direct state appropriations or grant funding. As a former county executive, I have a lot of experience writing successful grant applications. Over the years, I have used that experience to help many local governments and organizations submit successful grant applications. So, please reach out to me if you are applying for state or federal grants on behalf of a local government or organization. I would be honored to assist in your application and support you with a letter of recommendation.Â
I am guided by one principle: constituents come first. Thanks again for allowing me to serve.
