Department of Education Announces Over $340,000 For Jellico High

October 22, 2009

Education Commissioner Timothy Webb is proud to announce Jellico High School has been awarded $349,716 through the Title I School Improvement High School Redesign Grant to improve student achievement.

“I am encouraged by the willingness of our schools to try new and innovative things to
improve the learning process for our students,” Senator Ken Yager said.

In order to receive the grant of up to $500,000, each school submitted a substantial redesign plan using the Eight Elements of High School Improvement: A Mapping Framework provided by the National High School Center as the research model.

“Schools need time and resources to make serious change,” Representative Chad Faulkner said. “I look forward to seeing our school make use of these additional resources to benefit our students.”

“We are excited that each of these schools and district’s decided to embark on a new path to success for their students,” Education Commissioner Timothy Webb said.

“There will be challenges in meeting the new standards set forth by the Tennessee Diploma Project and we want our students to have the best tools in preparing themselves for the future.”

Each district’s plan for its school was required to focus on meeting federal grant
measurable outcomes:

- To substantially redesign high schools to meet new standards and prepare students for the next level of schooling

- To improve student proficiency and increase the number of schools that make AYP

- To use data to make informed decisions and create a system of continuous feedback and improvement

- To sustain redesign and subsequent improvements without assistance from state or private external technical assistance providers
