Sen. Yager Supports Legislation Allowing For Random Drug Testing For Students In Extra-Curriculur Activities
MARCH 9, 2009

(NASHVILLE, TN), March 9, 2009 -- State Senator Ken Yager (R-Harrmian) said today he will support legislation calling for random drug testing for students participating in extracurricular activities.   Yager said the bill is an important step towards prevention of drug and alcohol use by youth.

Two bills are currently pending in the Tennessee General Assembly calling for the random drug tests.  Yager said the drug testing is important to help children, who become addicted more rapidly that adults, get the needed intervention since recovery is also less likely than adults.

“By the time the student is caught, it can be too late for intervention,” said Senator Yager.  “Testing for illegal drug and alcohol use is one of the best tools to catch the problem early and get help for these young people before it is too late.  We must deter drug use in its earliest stages to have the best chance to insure the student remains drug free in the future and to help stop use by other students.”

“Many of the youth participating in extracurricular activities are role models whose practices are emulated by other students,” added Yager.  “School administrators need reasonable means to stop drug use in their schools.  This bill will help us move closer to our goal of having a safe and drug-free learning environment.”
